Vacuums
This has irritated the B-Geezus out of me for a while now. Why does it seem so darn hard to design and build a vacuum that will last for more than a year and actually clean the floors?

Just in the last 2 years we’ve gone through at least 4 vacuums from different makers and they all suck (and not in a good way). We bought Hoover, Bissell, Oreck and tried someone else’s Dyson. The first 3 broke and the Dyson couldn’t pick up enough dust to justify the exorbitant cost.

We just bought a new Shark Euro-Pro and while I can’t vouch for the reliability yet I can say that the performance and convenience is the best we’ve found so far. We resisted buying Shark because all the reviews we read pretty much panned the brand across the board. This is evidently a new up-market model from Shark and we’re very impressed with the thought that went into the design. We will keep everyone posted to see if this model lasts for a few months at least.

Re: Vacuums

Art, I have a Dyson that I bought 2 years ago that pickups well and when a part broke, I called Dyson and they sent me the replacement part free of charge, including shipping.  Although it cost a lot, I figured that since we were spending $100 or more each year on a new vacuum, we would save if it lasts 4 years.  So, far so good, we're half way there.  Barbara Berg

Re: Vacuums

I'm sorry you are having so much trouble with poor quality vacs.  Ours is a Hoover Supreme with Wind Tunnel Technology.  I do not know how old it is, I would say it is greater than 5 years old and we've had no trouble (knock on wood!)  Maybe I don't run my vac. as much as you do.  I told my husband about your post and he wanted to know WHAT you are vacuuming up!  Our last one was a hoover and it was pretty old and was reliable until my husband broke it  :)  I have back and neck problems and vacuuming is a no no so maybe mine isn't used as much as yours.  Maybe they are all like this now, but ours has little red, green and yellow lights to show if it removed the dirt.

Re: Vacuums

We have owned a Dyson "Animal" (the purple one ) for three years now.  We have two dogs and it literally pulls the carpet into an upright position and cleans all the way down the bottom of the carpet thread.  When I am done vacuuming, my carpets seem like new again.   I love my Dyson.  I wouldn't trade it for anything.  It was well worth the price in my opinion.
